Elizabeth found that Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner were the ideal travelling companions. They did not feel the need to talk constantly like Mrs. Bennet and yet when they were silent there was no awkwardness. Mr. Gardiner spent a great deal of time examining his papers, though every time they stopped for a change of horses he put the business away and saw that they had refreshments and told Lizzy of any points of interest she should look out for on the next part of the journey.

When Mrs. Gardiner wasn’t taking a nap, she told Elizabeth more about her childhood home in Lambton which she was hoping to visit. “We were not wealthy, Lizzy, but I have such happy memories. There were ten of us all in a small stone cottage.”

“And do any of your family still live there?” asked Elizabeth.

“My parents died some years ago and my brothers and sisters have all moved away. But I have an old aunt and a cousin. It is some years since I have seen them.”

“I am looking forward to seeing where you spent your childhood,” said Elizabeth truthfully.

“Even if it is so close to Pemberley?” asked Mr. Gardiner.

Elizabeth blushed. She had hoped it was a subject that had been forgotten.

Mrs. Gardiner frowned at her husband. “Lizzy, I will enjoy showing you around Lambton. It is small to be sure and it will have changed, but I will be glad to stop there for several days. I hope you will like it.”

“I’m sure I will.”
